Pretty Shield
Page 2

A story by Ben Wambli Ska

...continued from Page 1

She folded its wing in order to place the injured wing in its proper position. Then she wrapped a piece of cloth as a sling around the eaglet's body to protect the injured wing. She made a cage and placed in the cage a similar eagle's nest for it to feel "at home" and to nest during the time she helped to restore the eaglet's wing back to normal health. Every day she would catch fresh fish to feed this eaglet with torn bits of the fish in order for it to devour and swallow to become strong again. With each time Pretty Shield came to the eaglet's cage to feed, it seemed very glad to see her. It would make a cry of happiness and steadily its hurt wing began to heal and grow stronger. Its premature feathers were beginning to change. Pretty Shield was assuming the role of its "mother".

Finally, the day arrived for Pretty Shield to remove the cloth from its injured wing to see if the eaglet could stretch the injured wing by extending it out and flapping it normally. The wing had healed and was strong again! Pretty Shield was so proud of her helping the baby eagle to become strong again. She hoped it would fly again soon. The eaglet proudly flapped its wide wings and bounced around in its cage. It seemed very excited to exercise its wings in this manner that it gave a loud and proud cry, "Cheee Cheee".

One day, Pretty Shield went to the area below the "Crow's Nest" to look for the big white-headed eagle. Soon, she heard that shrilling call, "Cheeee Cheeee". The big eagle came swooping down in a graceful glide to where Pretty Shield was standing. What a thrilling sight to see such a big bird with such a wide wingspan sailing gracefully in its gliding path to Pretty Shield. Then, it rapidly rose to a higher height calling all the time as if to ask, "Where is my baby eagle?" Pretty Shield went to the cage to get the eaglet to test its ability to fly. She let it mount on her left arm. When she approached the place where she wanted to release the eaglet, she raised her arm and off the eaglet began to fly. It circled the area several times and returned to perch on Pretty Shield's arm. The eaglet seemed so proud of its achievement. For Pretty Shield, what a joy she had in her heart that the eaglet was flying normally once again. It repeated taking flight and returning not once but several times. Now it was very strong. The big white-headed eagle was there flying also, and gave its shrilling call to the eaglet. The eaglet replied to the big white-headed eagle with its renewed call as if to say with pride and joy, "I can fly!"

Pretty Shield proudly and joyously named the eaglet "Cheee Cheee!" Pretty Shield yelled to the eaglet, "Come Cheee Cheee, come to me. Alight on my arm and let me see you!" Her arm was extended up and out. Soon Cheee Cheee swooped down with a graceful glide and landed on Pretty Shield's arm. What a thrilling experience for Pretty Shield to admire Cheee Cheee's improvement and accomplishments. Cheee Cheee's recovery was a total success. Now, it was on its own in Mother Earth's world.

Pretty Shield raised her arm as if to say to the eaglet, "Fly big bird and join your Mother!" Cheee Cheee immediately took flight and made a large circle of the area. It gave its loud shrilling call as though giving a grateful token of thank you. Very soon the big white-headed eagle and Cheee Cheee were in sight flying together. What a thrilling sight to see the two of them successfully flying higher and higher in their world. Soon they were almost gone out of sight -- just two specks in the sky!

Days and then weeks passed that Pretty Shield did not see Cheee Cheee. She began to wish for the eaglet to appear in the sky. She wondered if any tragedy had come to Cheee Cheee. Pretty Shield did not want to wait longer. She yelled "Cheeee Cheeee - Cheeee Cheeee" as loud as she could! But there was no sign that the eaglet was in sight returning to her. Almost giving up the idea of seeing Cheee Cheee again, she turned to walk away. She paused a moment for she thought she heard a faint cry off in the far distant part of the sky, she looked skyward and yelled louder and louder, "Cheee-Cheee!" There, high above her soaring and flapping its wings in flight and heading towards Pretty Shield was her majestic eagle! Cheee Cheee was gliding with such a smooth and graceful approach as it alighted on her arm. She was very proud of her bird! It came home to Pretty Shield!
